No matter your industry or job title, everyone wants to get the most out of their day and increase productivity. You can’t have more hours in your day, but you can use these six tips to achieve more and feel better about the hours.
1. Eat food and drink water.
One of the biggest barriers to accomplishing your to-do list can be a growling stomach. Commit to starting your day with a filling breakfast and always make time to eat lunch. If you are hungry can you really focus while on that important call you’ve been preparing for the last week?
Well-rounded meals and snacks aren’t the only things you should be consuming. Having water at your desk and making sure you are hydrated will assist in keeping your energy levels up as well. Increase your productivity every day by fueling your body with what it needs to stay focused on the tasks at hand.
2. Tackle quick hitters in the morning and big tasks in the afternoon.
If you are anything like me, I need to accomplish or finish something each day to feel productive. The way I structure my day helps me achieve this.
In the morning, I work on what I call ‘quick hitters’. In basketball, a quick hitter is a play with one pass and maybe one or two cuts that are designed to get your scorer an open, early shot.1 At work, quick hitters are tasks I know I can complete today.
In the afternoon, I save my bigger projects that I need time to really focus and make progress. This structure means I know every day I will accomplish something while not losing sight of my larger, ongoing projects.
This small change can help you feel more productive and keep you motivated!
3. Take breaks to keep productivity moving.
Feeling a little sluggish? Are all your notes from the last meeting blurring together?
Take a quick walk around the office or better yet, outside and get some fresh air. Giving your brain a break will help you come back refreshed and ready to refocus on the task at hand.
4. Focus on finishing one thing at a time and celebrate each completed task.
Do you find yourself jumping from answering three different emails while trying to finish a report and preparing for your next big meeting tomorrow? Think about how long it takes for you to accomplish all those things.
Train yourself to not start a new task until you finish the one on your plate.
Doing this will allow you to devote your full attention to one thing at a time, will increase your efficiency and knock out your to-do list.
If you need some extra motivation give yourself a five-minute break every time you finish a task or better yet keep a small bag of your favorite snack at your desk and reward yourself with a bite each time you accomplish something.
5. Turn your cell phone on SILENT.
If you know you need to push out a project you need to eliminate all distractions – especially your cell phone. Turn it on silent and flip it over so you can’t see the screen. When you do that, you can’t hear it and you won’t see when it lights up from a notification.
You would be amazed how productive you can be without your phone interrupting every five minutes.
6. Write and prioritize your tasks for the next day BEFORE you leave for the day.
Every night before I leave the office, I write my task list for the next day. Instead of coming in the next morning and sleepily trying to figure out what I need to work on, it is already put together and prioritized so I can get right to work.
Having a set to-do list will also help you jump back on track if you get interrupted by an issue or meeting.
It feels good to get things done! These six tips make sure I have the most productive day possible and I’m sure they will help you too.
